running mac os x on your windows...it's easier than it seems

How To Get Mac OS X Running On Windows

PearPC was released on May 10, 2004 and was the first and only emulator to allow PowerPC architecture emulation well in an x86 environment. In short, PearPC will let you run Mac OS X on a Windows computer. The version of Windows you have does not matter, but I recommend your computer has at least a 1.2 ghz processor, 256mb RAM, and atleast 7 gb of free space. Now before you start this keep in mind that you will need a Mac OS X install disc, which can be purchased from the Apple Store for $129. If you already have an install disc from another Mac OS X computer, you may use that. Now let's get started...

1. Download PearPC - PearPC does not have a final version yet. For this installation, I recommend download this file* and extracting it to C:\. Then go to My Computer, click on Local Disk (C:) and rename the folder ppc_trunk_sdl_nightly to PearPC.

2. Download a Blank Disk Image - This image is compressed in an irregular file format to save space, and WinRAR is the best application you can use to extract this file. You must have at least 6gb on the drive you are extracting the image to for this to work properly. Extraction may take up to 3:00 minutes, so if WinRAR stops responding, that is normal. Here is the file: PearHD.bz2. You should extract it to C:\PearPC.

3. Configure PearPC - Here's the hard part...configure it. Right click and save this boot file to your PearPC directory. Open the file up with Notepad. Change the "E" where it says "pci_ide0_slave_image = "E:\"" to what your CD drive letter is, as shown here:

Go to File>Save and then close notepad.

4. Install OS X - Insert your OS X Installation CD in the letter drive you specified in step 3. Go to Start>Run... type "cmd" and hit enter. You should see a command window. In the command window type C:\PearPC\ppc.exe C:\PearPC\boot.txt as shown here:

If you see the message starting with This Program Is Free Software on the command window but another window with PPC in blue letters at the top does not come up, go to step 6. If you do see the screen, it should show the following:

Type 1 and hit enter and you should see a grey Apple screen with a spinning spinny thing under it. After 2 minutes, the Mac OS X installer will come up and ask you what language you want. If you can see two mouses on the screen, press F1. Keep clicking continue on the installer, and agree until you get to the Select a Destination screen. You should see the drive "Untitled 1". Click on it and then click continue. On the next screen (Easy Install on "Untitled 1") click Customize on the bottom left side of the window. On this window, un-click all the options except for Essential System Software, then click Install. You can skip checking the install disc. The Installation takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 and a half hours. I suggest you leave your computer alone and watch a good movie.

5. Running OS X - When the installation completes, PearPC should close. Eject the OS X Installation Disc from your CD drive and Run cmd. Type the same thing you did to run PearPC before (C:\PearPC\ppc.exe C:\PearPC\boot.txt) and this time when you get to the screen that has the blue PPC at the top you should only see one choice. Type 1 and then enter. Mac OS X will startup and will ask you to enter some information about yourself. For now, skip anything related to e-mail, internet, or .Mac. And your done. Mac OS X has successfully been installed on PearPC!
